Cosmetics containers play important roles with a purpose of keeping the quality of the product (content) unchanged so that the users can use up the product to the last drop without worrying about the quality. While keeping the product safe, the containers also make the products easier to use. The shape, size, weight, hardness and other elements of each container are carefully designed for the use and storage of the product by the users.

In addition to ensuring the functionality of containers and packaging, making effective use of limited resources to create a sustainable society is a high priority for the cosmetics industry. In order for the cosmetics industry to remain truly sustainable, it is necessary to increase resource efficiency and at the same time further appeal the attractiveness of cosmetics through products.

In April 2022, the Act on Promotion of Resource Circulation for Plastics (the Plastic Resource Circulation Act) came into effect. The Act recommends the formulation of guidelines for environmentally friendly designs for each product field. In response, the JCIA published the Guidelines for Environmentally Conscious Design for Cosmetic Containers and Packaging (FY2022) in June 2022.
While fully fulfilling the role of business operators under the Plastic Resource Circulation Act and the Act on the Promotion of Sorted Collection and Recycling of Containers and Packaging, members of the JCIA continue making further efforts of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Renewable” taking into account the characteristics of their respective businesses and products with an aim to contribute to solving global environmental problems and plastic resource recycling.
