5. Cosmetics Consumption

The Family Income and Expenditure Survey by the Statistics Bureau of Japan, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications shows that the average annual expenditure on cosmetics per household with two or more people was 35,454 yen at the national level in 2002. It decreased by approximately 3,000 yen over the two years from 2004, falling to around 32,000 yen in 2006. Since then, it has been rising gradually, reaching 37,794 yen in 2019, before decreasing again to 35,897 yen in 2022. Expenditures in Tokyo have generally been above the national average and continue to rise, although with repeated fluctuations. (Fig.10)
